Joaquin Phoenix is probably one of the greatest actors of our time, fact.
Well whether you believe this or not his commitment to his craft and his accomplishments are undeniable. Phoenix was for a large time known for the reputation built by his (late) older brother River, who passed away tragically in '93.
However he has grown into his own entity and is now synonymous which some of the greatest actors and performance artists in history. Following the release and subsequent press tours of the mockumentary I'm Still Here (2010) he received a mixed review of some calling him "Insane" and others lauding him as a modern day Andy Kaufmann, a comic known for subversive humour portrayed by Jim Carrey in the biopic Man on the Moon (1999). More recently with his acceptance speech upon winning the Best Actor BAFTA for Joker (2019), he demonstrates Brando-esque levels of social understanding as he takes on the responsibility for the lack of ethnic diversity within the industry.
Over the course of his career he has shown tremendous range from the jealous and twisted Commodus in Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), the party hard Ray Elwood in Buffalo Soldiers (2001), through the nebbish and love lorn character of Theodore in Her (2013).
Now in this insightful interview following You Were Never Really Here (2017) Phoenix gives a unique look into how he prepares for his roles.
